Community Involvement 2001

SA Junior Heifer Expo

Another rewarding aspect of Lyn Nitschke’s role as Stud Principal is her involvement with future South Australian cattle industry leaders. Lyn actively encourages interested young people from the city and country to gain firsthand experience in the beef cattle industry by entering the SA Heifer Expo. For the past several years, she has shared her passion for Poll Shorthorns by coaching and mentoring these young people in preparation for the Expo. The experience gained through this process creates lifetime supporters of and participants in the beef industry.

Carlton Stud has provided many young people with the opportunity to learn new skills and to exhibit Carlton heifers at the biggest Heifer Expo in the Southern Hemisphere. It is not uncommon for Carlton heifers to be proudly exhibited by a team of up to ten young people aged from 8 to 24 years. Many of these young people return annually to prepare (and fall in love with) new heifers for the competition in July.

Steer Competitions

To assist young people to learn about and gain an interest in the Shorthorn breed and beef cattle production in general, Carlton generously donates steers to several schools to participate in carcass competitions.

Agricultural students at the following institutions have benefited from this hands on approach:

  • Eastern Fleurieu School;
  • Mount Barker High School;
  • Murray bridge High School;
  • Oakbank Area High School;
  • Trinity College;
  • Westminster College; and
  • Scotch College.

O'Conner Cup

Carlton won the 2002 O’Conner Cup for the best team of 3 steers judged at the Royal Adelaide Show.
