Community Involvement 2001

SA Junior Heifer Expo

Another rewarding aspect of Lyn Nitschke’s role as Stud Principal is her involvement with future South Australian cattle industry leaders. Lyn actively encourages interested young people from the city and country to gain firsthand experience in the beef cattle industry by entering the SA Heifer Expo. For the past several years, she has shared her passion for poll shorthorns by coaching and mentoring these young people in preparation for the Expo.

Carlton Stud has provided many young people with the opportunity to learn new skills and to exhibit Carlton heifers at the biggest Heifer Expo in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2001, a team of 8 young people aged from 9 to 19 years proudly exhibited Carlton heifers. Many of these young people will return again this year to prepare new heifers for the competition in July.

Steer Competitions

To assist young people to learn about and gain an interest in the Shorthorn breed and beef cattle production in general, Carlton has generously donated steers to exhibit in carcass competitions to several schools.

Agricultural students at the following institutions have benefited from this hands on approach:
Eastern Fleurieu School;
Mount Barker High School;
Murray bridge High School;
Oakbank Area High School; and,
Scotch College.

Information Days

Carlton Stud has hosted several Information Days for students and cattle breeders interested in expanding their knowledge and keeping up to date with the latest in cattle care and the beef industry.
