History

The Carlton story begins more than 40 years ago in outback New South Wales when Lyn Nitschke’s first shorthorn calf was born on Lynray Station, 160 kilometres north of Broken Hill. Lynray Station is Lyn’s family property and ran all poll shorthorn cattle.

Lyn’s herd grew over the years and when she married John, she brought two truckloads of her best cattle to Carlton at Hahndorf in South Australia.

In 1980, Lyn purchased twenty registered heifers from the dispersal of Bruce Fuller’s stud at Yongala in South Australia’s mid north.

On this infusion of genetics, mixed with her own cattle from Lynray, the Carlton Poll Shorthorn Stud was founded in 1989.

That same year, Lyn purchased six stud heifers from Belmore Stud in South Australia’s south east and Springwood Station in New South Wales’ western division.

Carlton takes part in numerous local and interstate shows and bull sales. Carlton also has a proud history of supporting young cattle enthusiasts by providing animals for the heifer shows and carcase competitions.

At present there are approximately 160 registered and 800 commercial females run at Carlton in Hahndorf and Beaumaris in the south east of South Australia.
