National Show Success
We are thrilled to announce our outstanding success at the Virbac Dubbo National Shorthorn Show. Carlton Winnathie W17, by US import Armstrong Major League (ET), took out the top award of Grand Champion and the Macquarie Williams trophy. This is the first time in the 44 year history of the event that a SA stud taken out the top honour.
The judge was renowned Poll Hereford breeder Jim Gunn, Sevenbardot Poll Hereford Stud, Rylestone NSW, whose father and grandfather were Shorthorn breeders. Mr Gunn was impressed by the performance and movement of Carlton Winnathie and noted that he was one of the most structurally correct bulls of any breed he had seen in a long time.
From the “Stock Journal” newspaper 19 June 2003
Obviously impressed by the SA showing among the 150 bulls he [Mr Gunn] awarded 20 ribbons to breeders from this State. These included five firsts from the 12 classes, three of the four division champions, two division reserve champions and, the best of all, grand champion, the first time this award has been captured by an SA stud in at least 25 yrs.
The grand championship went to Lyn and John Nitschke, Carlton Stud, Hahndorf, with their bull Carlton Winnathie W17, a wonderful roan son of Armstrong Major League (US). A convincing winner of his class, the 27 month old 1040kg bull had impressive raw data with 14/9 fat measurements and an eye muscle of 130sqcm. “He was so correct, had a powerful head, tremendous bone, a great top line, heaps of muscle and he walked beautifully,” Mr Gunn said.

For Sale
Carlton biannually sells bulls at the Naracoorte and Dubbo Shorthorn Sales. In 2003, we have sold our entire offering of older stud sires, however, junior bulls are still available.
As rain starts to lift the burden of drought across Australia buyers who wish to restock and quickly improve their herds are snapping up Carlton stud and commercial females. Limited numbers are now available for viewing at either the Hahndorf or Padthaway properties. Contact Lyn Nitschke for further details.
Purchases
The latest addition to the line up of premium genetics at Carlton Stud is an eighth semen share in Royalla Exterminator, bought from the Thompson’s Bayview Shorthorn stud near Yorketown in South Australia. The Thompsons bought this outstanding 12 month old, red roan sire from the Marellan-Royalla sale in Cumnock, NSW for $25,000. Exterminator, by Weebollabolla Theodore and a Marellan Vagabond cow, is a smooth-coated youngster with an excellent head and very clean lines. We very much look forward to seeing his progeny on the ground.
After winning his class at the 2001 Royal Adelaide Show, Broome Fugitive V129 took out the Junior Bull Championship. Carlton Stud purchased Fugitive from Jilian Leeds’ Broome Stud in NSW for $20,000. Fugitive is a son of Eionmor Mr Gus 80C. His first drop of calves, born over the summer of 2002 – 2003, are terrific low birth weight calves that are growing out beautifully. Look out for them in the show rings in 2004.

In December 2001, Carlton and Belmore Studs purchased cattle from the Trevino Stud dispersal sale in Southern Cross, Western Australia. These cows will enhance the versatility of our stud by adding new bloodlines. We are thrilled with their new calves! Read on for details…
Calves
The first drop of over 30 calves from the Trevino Stud cows is magnificent. Born in March 2002, they are a very even line of reds and roans, with excellent muscle development. Two young Trevino bulls and one heifer will represent Carlton at this year’s Shorthorn Feature Breed Royal Adelaide Show.
Steer Competition
In 2003, Lyn Nitschke organised SA shorthorn breeders to donate 26 steers to schools around the State. Of the total 26 steers, Carlton Stud donated 5 animals. Shorthorn is the feature breed at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show in September. There will be an impressive display of many Shorthorn steers that will not doubt be the envy of other breeds. The steer competition allows an in depth comparison between breeds, as well as increasing the profile of the quality product produced for the current domestic and export markets. Shorthorn steers are renowned for their outstanding daily weight gain and their do-ability in feedlots.
SA Junior Heifer Expo 2003
14 - 17 July 2003
This year saw our stud continue the tradition of offering young cattle enthusiasts the opportunity to improve their handling and industry skills at the largest heifer expo in the southern hemisphere.
Most of our stud’s previous representatives were back for another year of competition. Their continuing commitment and motivation was combined with an extra 12 months of maturity, strength and knowledge of what it takes to prepare their heifers and themselves for competition. 9 handlers entered 9 Carlton heifers.
Several of the team members, handlers and heifers, received placings and ribbons. A special mention of outstanding performances by Ashlee Oldfield and Tahlia
Papini.
- Tahlia won Sub Intermediate Champion Handler
- Ashlee came 2nd in the National Bank award
